My journey began much more recently. With the benefit of hindsight, I realize that my first step was in the autumn of 2022. The pandemic had caused a lot of introspection that led to revelations and the re-evaluation of spiritual things. At the time, every Tuesday and Thursday, my husband took the kids to visit his parents. After I finished work, I had three hours of quiet before they returned home. I filled that time with a lot of the mundane tasks that are hard to get done with three young kids running around. While cleaning or washing dishes, I'd light candles and listen to older shows I had never had the opportunity to watch before. It may sound very silly, but "The Good Witch" captured my heart. Then life went through another chaotic upheaval in 2023 when I was laid off from my tech job. I spent months unemployed while searching and eventually had to go freelance to pay the bills.

Through that immense stress (or, perhaps, because of it) I was quietly deconstructing from my old religion and belief system. Once your eyes are open to certain truths, it is not possible to close them again — at least, for me. It's been a wild ride, but this summer was the first time I felt comfortable saying to myself and my husband that I'm a witch at heart (though currently agnostic, as I'm working with deity-related trauma).

I've just gotten brave enough to explore some simple rituals and spells, but mostly I'm in the baby steps of adding touches of magic and whimsy into my daily life. It's helping me re-discover the joy that had faded from my life. Two weeks ago, my husband surprised me with "Herbal Magic: A Handbook of natural Spells, Charms and Potions" by Aurora Kane. Guess that is my first book.

I'm not fully out-of-the-broom closet, though, and have no idea where I'm heading. All I know is that I walk the path of kindness... to myself, to other people, to animals, to nature, and to our only home: this planet.

I have some many memories that looking back take on an entirely different meaning. I really was a baby witch without knowing it. Then I met some awesome people who welcomed me into open arms and hearts and I've never looked back. If you asked me what 'kind' witchcraft I am up to, well I'm not sure I could tell you. I do believe strongly in the magic of community and shared vision though. That and the very special moments created with heart-sisters who get you.
